Included in the lineup is a charcoal-colored wig with dark-blue highlights, with a velvety black zipper boasting rhinestone teeth cutting across it. She wore the original in a strawberry blond hue for her 2001 "In the Air Tonite" music video. "She was not afraid to change. I could bring five different wigs in, and she'd love and want to wear all of them. It was no problem, I didn't get a lot of pushback. It was the best thing ever — I was able to express my creativity."

She brings an interest in creating equitable, livable and resilient cities, with a particular focus on design-driven engagement and visual storytelling. Her work at MYKD includes masterplanning design for the Wellesley Science Hill Campus and resiliency parks in Boston in the Seaport District. Based in Seattle since 1999, this 45-person practice has a professional staff with expertise in landscape architecture, architecture, art, engineering and ecology. GGN provides clients with extensive skill in the design of high-use, prominently sculptural landscapes in complex urban contexts. The firm’s work operates from deep research into each site’s history, ecology and communities and varies in scale and type, from campus and master plans to furniture. Among its notable work is the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Lurie Garden at Millennium Park and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Campus.
The range of designed landscapes, from playgrounds to parks and master plans, all feature seasoned understandings of hydrology and lighting plus holographic technology in such projects as the ChonGae Canal Restoration Project. Founded in 1987, this landscape architecture and urban design practice has offices in Rotterdam, New York and Brussels. Key projects include the Governors Island Park, Schouwburgplein public square and four WaveDecks on the Toronto waterfront. Over the course of two decades, Mikyoung Kim Design has crafted an exceptional body of work that redefines the discipline of landscape architecture. From carefully crafted stonework to complex metal fabrication, their unconventional artistic vision is inspired by the unique aspirations of each individual community.
Alek is a research member of our research wing developing ways to integrate inclusive design into the projects in the studio. Jess oversees the day-to-day of highly urbanized sites working from concept development to construction. She has extensive experience in managing complex teams and overseeing coordination of consultants throughout the life of a project. She is also the research coordinator for our research wing that is focused on neurodiversity.

Emmett is passionate about working with people to better their communities through design. He enjoys the creative process and believes first and foremost the design must be effective and address the problems at hand. At MYKD, Emmett helps to guide a team of designers on variety of projects from the Texas Medical Center research campuses to urban infill and public park spaces in downtown Boston. Established in 1988, Michel Desvigne Paysagiste enjoys collaborations on premier projects such as the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis with Herzog & de Meuron and the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts with Norman Foster and REX/OMA.
Included in the exhibit are four recreations of wigs Lil' Kim wore in the late '90s and early 2000s, done by her then-hairstylist, Dionne Alexander. Alexander, now based in Dallas, was part of a team that included stylist Misa Hylton and makeup artist Nzingha. The three worked with Kim and unwittingly created the aesthetic blueprint female rappers still strictly adhere to. Teaching really taught me to love engagement and learn that other people have these ideas that can open a door in your mind.
Touring, educating around the world, not just to hairstylists but to aspirational hairstylists, using my hair career to inspire. Landscape architecture is, far too often, the forgotten profession of the construction industry. When I go work in Abu Dhabi or Qatar, I feel like everything seems fresh and special and I can bring a new appreciation for the familiar. In working closely with hospital administration a number of objects were upcycled from the site, including trees repurposed into benches.
Having that as the basis of design has also helped me understand why we pursue certain projects over others. It goes beyond monetizing design but has an authentic framework that shapes the process of building the firm. For us, it’s about ways in which we can strengthen neighborhoods one person at a time. She graduated with a BS in Sculpture/Art History in 1989.[3] She subsequently studied landscape architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design, graduating in 1992. At Harvard, she studied concurrently at the GSD and at the MIT VES (Visual and Environmental Studies) department, developing designs, sculpture, installations and videos. While at Harvard, she was the Norman T. Newton Scholar and received the Jacob Weidenmann Prize for Design.
Distinguishing the firm’s work is its decidedly agricultural aesthetic and approach to urban sites. MDP prefers to introduce flexible frameworks and planting strategies that create varied, unpredictable densities and textures, unlike the prescribed manicured spaces that are the rage today. Through this approach, MDP projects play with time and succession (vegetation growth, ephemeral experiences brought on by seasonal changes), thus acquiring vast quantities of anticipation and possibility. Mikyoung Kim, FASLA is an American landscape architect, urban designer, and founding principal of Mikyoung Kim Design. Kim has received the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Award and the American Society of Landscape Architects National Design Medal.
There’s a scalar consideration for each piece of music that is also very architectural — in all kinds of music both classical and jazz. I also learned about a world that can be created without the visual, which I think is very important in the multi-sensory experience of the landscape. In music, both the global and the detailed scale matter, and each informs the other. Katherine is interested in biophilic design strategies that unify architectural elements with landscape architecture. She strongly believes in the physical, mental, and social benefits of re-imagining the relationship between the two disciplines and the sustainability opportunities therein. Additionally, she highly values the importance of teaching and volunteering as a medium for design exposure and likes to spend her free time volunteering in her local community.
Experimenting with touch, sight, and sound, the Boston-based landscape architect has built her name creating immersive environments—from backyard oases to waterfront redevelopments—that spark curiosity and contemplation. I admire the parents and families who advise us on our design within hospitals — families that have lost children in pediatric hospitals like Boston Children’s and find a way to seek out hope even when the worst has happened. When we meet some of these families we understand that their first night in the hospital is the worst day of their life.
A large Dawn Redwood tree is reused for a sacred table within the hospital’s multifaith chapel. A classically trained musician, she was set on becoming a pianist until tendinitis forced her to switch paths. Homelessness has surged in the United States, with devastating effects on the public health system. Alek is a recipient of the Susan Nelson Fleiss Travel Scholarship supporting international travel for the purpose of research, design, or personal development.
She received her BA from Montana State University and her MLA from the University of British Columbia. So what of the OG wigs, the ones that graced Lil' Kim's head in the late '90s and early aughts? "Back then, everything was raw. We had no idea these moments would happen," she says, noting that it's possible that Kim may have taken them off set with her. Perhaps the originals are in a mansion in some suburb, propped up on a mannequin head alongside other fabulous vintage designer pieces from 25 years ago. To Alexander's delight, the exhibit gave her a chance to give one of her favorite units she did for Kim its proper time in the sun.
Key projects for this firm include the Red Ribbon Park, the 26-hectare Yanweizhou Park in Jinhua and the Shanghai Houtan Park. Since its founding in 1953 by Hideo Sasaki, Sasaki is now a 270-person-strong firm offering high-quality service in landscape architecture, architecture, civil engineering, urban planning and urban design, graphic design and branding and data science. Tong strives towards designs that are sensitive and responsive to the community, it's culture, history, and ecology. With an interdisciplinary background in engineering and the arts, Tong approaches landscape design as a creative medium that can forge connections between people, spaces, and ideas.
